‘The hardest loss’ – Jordan Spieth’s caddy was moved to tears as he wishes for a moment back

When it comes to the game of golf, Jordan Spieth has accomplished something that very few will ever have the opportunity to do.

And he did it all with his long-time caddy behind him.

During his long career as a Spieth carrier – beginning in 2011 – Michael Greller has taken part in these incredible flights of fancy.

But he has also experienced some lows.

While there’s no doubt that Spieth has had a Hall of Fame career, that doesn’t come without his fair share of tough losses.

Recently, Greller was asked if there was one mistake that stands out in his time as a caddy and quickly recalled the 2015 Open Championship in St. Andrews.

“For me, this was the hardest loss,” he began.

“A caddy once told me: The better a player you work for, the more great wins you will have and the harder the losses will be.

“You want to work for the big guys and you will suffer heavy losses.”

“St. Andrews, that was a tough question because [Spieth] had won the first two majors this year and was tied for the lead with two holes to go.

On that day, the US star had a chance to win his third major of the season, but failed to birdie either of the final two holes to secure a spot in the playoffs.

The moment that hurts Greller the most came on the 18th hole, when Spieth came up short on his approach and had to accept an impossible birdie putt.

“If I had to do it again, he ended up hitting a gap wedge, he stopped and was aggressive because he was trying to make birdie there on the 18th hole at St. Andrews,” Greller recalled.

“And at the end he came up short and it came all the way down and he had to make a 40-foot throw to get into the playoffs.”

Greller went on to reveal how upset this moment had been for him.

“I actually cried afterward, I was so upset,” he said.

“He was on the verge of literally winning the first three majors.

“Then he finished second at Whistling Straits in the PGA Solo this year [Championship].

“He wasn’t far away from winning all four majors. So that’s probably one I’m thinking about.”
