Dropping out of school can cause an overpriced filly to falter

This is a significant class drop for Catton Ladywho finished fifth out of ten in a 0-86 race at Redcar last time – not at all strong for a Class 2, but significantly stronger than this 0-69 contest, in which each of her rivals is rated worse than all of them faced with Redcar.

She also ran a longer-than-ideal mile that day, but on her penultimate run she was handicapped on this seven-eighths-of-a-mile ride at Carlisle, another stronger 074 race than today in which she finished third on soft ground 12th place went to Boden.

She missed second place by a hair behind the very progressive winner Myal, who has since won two Grade 3 handicaps in a row and beaten a total of 23 competitors to complete a four-timer contest.

Best bet: Catton Lady both ways in 14-12 at Catterick

Catton Lady had little chance of beating this top-class winner, but she came within a whisker of beating everyone else, six of whom were rated higher than today’s field.

Despite this big run in a stronger race, the three-year-old filly is down a pound in this much less competitive race, held on the same trip and on very similar ground.

Catton Lady was in good form against better competition and also ran very well on her season debut at Thirsk, finishing third out of nine with another stronger handicap and needing that run she is at her lowest by 5lb Career dropped, so she seems like a good bet after a handy stall 2 draw.

From the others, Mr. Sox copes well on this special track and should do well here again, although he ended up in midfield here last time.

That was in Class 4 company, but his previous three route figures were 112, with the third of those runs also coming in Class 4 on this trip.

It’s not hard to imagine him doing well in a lower division Class 5 at this track, even if he’s currently 5 pounds over his highest winning mark.

Next best bet: Mister Sox both ways at 14-12 at Catterick
