Australia Rugby Stars In Cardiff Scrap As One Player Claims He Was Punched In The Face
Three former Australian rugby players—Adam Ashley-Cooper, Drew Mitchell, and Matt Giteau—have shared details of a physical altercation with teenagers in Cardiff. The players, who host the *Kick Offs and Kick Ons* podcast, were in the Welsh capital for a night out before the Wallabies’ Test match against Wales.
On Saturday night, they visited Boom Battle Bar in Cardiff’s Brewery Quarter. After a fun evening, they went to a nearby Nando’s for a meal, where things quickly escalated. Mitchell recalled the incident during a chat on the *For The Love Of Rugby* podcast, hosted by England’s Ben Youngs.
“We just thought we’d go for a cheeky Nando’s,” Mitchell said, describing how a man suddenly approached him in the crowded restaurant asking about the medium sauce. When Mitchell told him to wait in line, the situation turned tense. The man got aggressive, and after Mitchell responded, things heated up. “I get clocked from the side by his mate, and then it really kicked off.”
Ashley-Cooper, adding to Mitchell’s story, recalled the young man proudly claiming to be 16 years old before things settled down with the help of security. “There were like six security guards,” Mitchell explained. “They kicked them out, and I said, ‘Just make sure they’re not waiting outside.'”
Despite the scare, the trio laughed it off. “I was like, ‘Drew, we don’t need this,'” Giteau joked. “In the papers, it would be ‘Drew Mitchell beats up a 16-year-old.’”
Mitchell admitted he was caught off guard. “He knew I had no peripheral vision, so I didn’t see it coming. Bang!” he said.
Fortunately, the players’ spirits were lifted by Australia’s dominant 55-20 win over Wales, who are under pressure after a tough loss. Meanwhile, Australia will face Scotland next.
