Jannik Sinner: World No. 1 withdraws from Paris Masters after viral illness confirmed | Tennis News
World No. 1 Jannik Sinner has withdrawn from the Paris Masters after confirming he was suffering from a viral illness.
Sinner was supposed to start his season on Wednesday in the French capital, but his withdrawal means rival Carlos Alcaraz remains the tournament’s top seed.
The Italian has almost two weeks to recover before the eight best players in the world meet at the season-ending ATP Finals in Turin. Live on Sky Sports from 10th to 17th November.
“I am very disappointed to inform you that I cannot play this tournament here,” Sinner said in a video message posted on the tournament’s social media accounts.
“I came here really early to prepare and then I felt sick. I have a virus at the moment that will go away in the next two to three days, so I am not physically ready to compete yet.”
“I’m very, very sorry, but we’ll see each other next year and hope that this year will be a great year without me too.”
Sinner claimed his first two Grand Slam titles this year, winning the Australian Open in January and then the US Open in September, with a semifinal exit at the French Open and a quarterfinal exit at Wimbledon in between.
The 23-year-old has won a total of seven ATP Tour titles in 2024, with his most recent success coming at the Shanghai Masters earlier this month when he beat Novak Djokovic in straight sets.
He also won the Six Kings Slam tournament in Saudi Arabia, defeating Alcaraz in the final.
