World Cup Hero Jean Kleyn Called Up To Replace Ruan Nortje In Springbok Squad
World Cup hero Jean Kleyn is set to join the Springboks in Edinburgh on Friday, stepping in for injured Ruan Nortje, who has been ruled out of the upcoming clash after suffering a leg injury in training.
Jean Kleyn, the 31-year-old lock who won a World Cup with South Africa last year, will rejoin the Springboks in Edinburgh on Friday. This will be his first time with the national team this season, following a return to action in the Vodacom United Rugby Championship for Munster in September, after a long break due to an eye injury.
Ruan Nortje, who had been a key player for the Springboks this season and helped them win the Castle Lager Rugby Championship, injured his leg during a training session on Wednesday. With only three Test matches remaining on the tour, Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus decided to bring Kleyn into the squad as a replacement.
Kleyn brings a lot of experience, having played five Tests for Ireland and seven for South Africa, plus his World Cup title. He adds depth to the Springboks’ lock options, joining players like RG Snyman, Franco Mostert, and Eben Etzebeth.
“Ruan’s injury is unfortunate, as he had a great season and really made an impact after being called up due to previous injuries,” said Erasmus. “He made the most of his opportunity, and we wish him a speedy recovery.”
Erasmus continued, “Ruan’s injury gives Jean the chance to return to the squad. He’s been playing well for Munster and is familiar with our game plans. Having been with us last season, he’ll settle back in easily. Plus, he’s used to the UK conditions, as he’s based in Ireland, so he’ll fit in right away.”
Erasmus will announce the team for the match against Scotland on Friday.
