Naomi Osaka’s trainer Patrick Mouratoglou explains why he thinks ‘mature’ Jack Draper has ‘no limits’ | Tennis News
Naomi Osaka’s coach Patrick Mouratoglou has praised the mature Jack Draper for his “more disciplined” performance and, following his Viennese waltz at the weekend, believes the British No.1 has “no limits” heading into 2025.
Draper continued his upward trend and won this Erste Bank Open wins its first ATP 500 title – the biggest title of his career.
The 22-year-old, who reached the semi-finals of the US Open in September, capped a fantastic season with a straight-sets victory over Karen Khachanov on Sunday.
Legendary coach Mouratoglou, who worked with tennis legend Serena Williams for a decade and more recently coached four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka, told it Sky Sports: “I think he’s a great player. Last year when he won the Ultimate Tennis Showdown.” [UTS]I think he played incredible tennis the whole three days.
“I feel like he’s a lot more mature now in terms of his game, his game plan and his style of play. Everything looks much more mature. And when you see him win in Vienna, you don’t get the feeling that he’s going crazy.” It’s his level. I think he has improved a lot this year.
“I think the big challenge for him now is to stay injury-free because for such a young player he has been injured a lot.”
“If he can stay injury-free then I think he is definitely a top 10 player and a player who has huge weapons and may have no limits.”
Mouratoglou, nicknamed “The Coach,” said Draper has improved all aspects of his game, especially his backhand.
Southpaw brawler Draper has made some important decisions while working with James Trotman, such as: Such as turning off his phone during practice and avoiding caffeine to increase his chances of competing with the game’s best players.
“I feel like his backhand is a lot better,” Mouratoglou said. “His backhand didn’t do much harm to the opponent before. I saw him play in Vienna and I thought he receives the ball much earlier with his backhand and he can hit the ball full by receiving the ball early.”
“With his quite flat backhand he can do a lot of damage to the players. And I feel like he has a clear game plan.”
“His game plan, the way he should play, his style is very, very clear now, which wasn’t so obvious before.”
“He is very solid and very disciplined in what he does. But I think that’s a big improvement he’s made this year.”
Consistency will be crucial for Draper as he looks to challenge the likes of world number one Jannik Sinner and two-time Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz for major honors in the future.
He is expected to pursue Masters 1000 titles and Grand Slam titles and continue to improve on his career-high ranking, which is currently No. 15.
“I think there is a lot of competition at the moment. There are two guys who are way above the others, Sinner and Alcaraz. But I think there is also a new generation coming with a lot of guys who have great potential. “Jack” is one of them,” Mouratoglou said. “He really believes in himself, which I think is great.
“We are used to this Rafa generation [Nadal]Roger [Federer]Novak [Djokovic]. The younger generations that came up never thought they could do it because, in their opinion, these three guys were unbeatable.
“But I feel like Alcaraz and Sinner are as young as they are, so they think, ‘Why not us?’
“There really is a great generation of players who can make it to the top. And again, Jack is one of them, but the competition is tough.”
