A Fortrose Academy student became Scottish boxing champion last weekend.

Ethan Hoult, 15, represented Highland Boxing Academy at the Scottish Development Championships, competing in the 50kg A class for athletes who had between zero and three fights to their name.

His head coach Liam Foy, who took part in a head-to-head final, was delighted to see the teenager win his first gold medal on the national stage.

“It was a great competition,” explained Foy.

“Ethan started a little slow in the first round, he was a little bit wrong-footed, but after we got him back into the corner we got him to prepare his attacks a little better.

“He did well in the second and third rounds and got the split decision. It was close, but we were confident he had done enough.

“It was great for him. He’s a young lad, only 15 years old, and it was his first title for the club – and our first title this season.

“It was great to give the young lad the opportunity to go down there, get competition experience and get the gold medal.”

Hoult wasn’t the only Ross representative on the HBA squad, 12-year-old Troy Stewart from Tain was also in action.

Stewart was also victorious in his fight but must return this weekend to try and secure his own title.

“Troy Stewart was one of two young boys we had boxing in the same age group at the age of 12 and both won their fights,” Foy added.

“It was great to see young talent in the gym and win both.

“They’ve both had a show before, but last weekend was their competitive debut. It was great that both of them got victories in the first weekend.

“The plan is for both to box in the semi-finals on Saturday and if they win, the final will take place on Sunday.”
